FHP dashcam video shows suspected drunk driver's car crash on Turnpike

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Newly released Florida Highway Patrol dashcam video shows how a suspected drunk driver's run from the law came to a crashing end.

The dramatic video shows how state troopers stopped a fleeing driver who they suspect was driving high, drunk and on a suspended license.

Authorities said they got calls from other drivers on the Florida Turnpike that night who said they saw the man's SUV swerving.

When troopers got behind the vehicle, the driver, Johnny Fisher, refused to stop.

Ultimately, one of the troopers used his car to do a PIT maneuver, tapping the back corner of the speeding SUV, causing it to swerve to the side and overturn.

Troopers rushed the vehicle, guns drawn, and dragged the man out.

Troopers said they found felony amounts of marijuana in the vehicle. They said the man also smelled of alcohol and marijuana.

"When's the last time you smoked marijuana?" a trooper asked Fisher, as a camera recorded their conversation.

"I don't smoke marijuana," Fisher replied.

"You don't smoke marijuana?" the trooper asked.

"No, man," Fisher said.

"Can I ask you a question then? Why is there marijuana in your beard?" the trooper said.

Channel 9 checked Fisher's driving history and found suspensions and violations dating back to 1996.

Authorities said there are more than 100,000 drivers in Orange County with suspended licenses, and 7,000 habitual offenders.

They said stopping all of those who continue to drive continues to be a major challenge.

Fisher was taken to the hospital and then to jail, where he was still being held Wednesday.
