FHP: Man arrested in DUI crash that killed pedestrian in Lake County

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — A DeBary man is facing charges after investigators said he was drunk when he struck and killed a pedestrian Saturday night.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said Robert Wenrick, 43, was heading eastbound on State Road 46 east of Wekiva River Road, when he hit and killed 20-year-old Conrad Berry.

Troopers said Berry was standing in the eastbound lane and the impact threw him in the median.

The victim’s long-time friend, Rebecca Berg, said Berry was walking to the Wekiva River to meet friends.

“Not only could they kill themselves, but they could kill other people who are completely innocent and have their entire lives in front of them,” Berg said.

She said the accident has left a huge void.

“He was an amazing guy. There’s nothing he wouldn’t do for anybody,” she said.

Berry’s death lit up social media, with friends writing messages of condolence on Facebook and Twitter.

“We’re just trying to get through the day. Trying to deal with the shock of him not actually being here,” Beg said.

Wenrick was arrested on misdemeanor DUI charges and failure to submit a breathalyzer test.

He was booked into the Lake County Jail on $50,250 bond.
