• FHP: Truck passes school bus, hits car head-on


    LAKE COUNTY, Fla. - The Florida Highway Patrol said a pickup truck driver tried passing a school bus on County Road 44A in Eustis in a no passing zone and caused a crash.

    Troopers said the driver, James Matheny, 53, of DeLand, hit another driver head-on and then hit the bus near Thrill Hill Road.

    A Eustis High School student went home with neck pain, but the others were OK.

    Troopers said Matheny was seriously injured.

    Another driver involved in the crash, Kenneth Oberstadt, 58, also obtained serious injuries.

    Matheny was ticketed for reckless driving, troopers said.
