NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — A student who brought an airsoft gun to New Smyrna Beach High School on Thursday triggered a code red lockdown, Volusia County Schools said.
The school district said a student noticed the gun and reported it to a school resource officer.
Investigators said Keevin Jelks, 18, tried to throw the gun into a trash can as he was stopped, officials said. He was arrested on charges of disruption of a school function.
We were just at New Smyrna Beach HS talking with them about school safety and right after we left the school had to be put on a “code red” lockdown. Volusia Co. Schools say a student had an air soft gun and was putting it in the trash can. No one hurt. Lockdown lifted. @WFTV pic.twitter.com/oHZVuRXZzT

Deputies said Jelks was already on probation for grand theft.
Students said Jelks pulled the gun out while he was rapping about shooting someone. Deputies said he told his classmates that it was a real gun.
Officials said the school was placed on a code red as a precaution, but it has since been lifted.
It's unknown if the gun was loaded and if any threats were made.
No one was injured.
"It's very scary," said Madison Detko, an 11th-grade student. "With everything going on in the world, you don't know what's happening around you. You can't trust people who (are) around you anymore."
Last week, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission issued a report calling for schools statewide to define classrooms' hard corners, where students could hide from gunmen who might be walking through hallways.
