• Habitat for Humanity tears down family's Seminole Co. home, will build from scratch

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. - Habitat for Humanity stepped in to help a Sanford family whose home was so bad that there was no other option other than to tear it down and start from scratch.

Inside 76-year-old Mattie McCray’s house, the kitchen was in such bad condition that the sink was falling from the wall and there was no air-conditioning and barely any running water, not to mention a roach infestation.

McCray lived in the home with her elderly, handicapped son and six great-grandchildren.

“And the bathroom wasn't working, because the faucet was torn up,” said McCray.

The home was bad that Habitat officials said they had no choice but to tear it down, something they don't normally do.

“I've been here for a long time and this is the first time I will be able to live in a new house,” said McCray.

The new home is the largest that Habitat for Humanity in Seminole County has ever built, and when it's done, McCray’s monthly mortgage payment will only be about $500.

Seminole County is set to pitch in about $50,000 in H.U.D. funding towards construction, and McCray’s family literally "worked off" the down payment, officials said.

“Several people in her family helped to do some sorting and pricing and working the cash registers in our stores,” said Penny Seater of Habitat.

The house is supposed to be ready by the end of April, around the same time McCray turns 77.

“It would be a big present,” she said. “Thank God for that.”

Seminole County has about $500,000 in special federal funding to put towards projects like this one.
