Daytona Beach Shores arrest 5-22-2019

The Daytona Beach Shores Department of Public Safety had quite a day today. Unfortunately, it ended with four injured officers and two officer-involved motor vehicle accidents. We're sure you noticed a heavier than normal police presence and we thought you may have some questions, so here is what happened: During a scuffle while attempting to take a male suspect into custody, two officers sustained minor injuries. The male suspect was arrested. While responding to assist the officers involved in the scuffle, an officer was involved in a motor vehicle accident in front of the public safety building. The officer and the occupants of the other vehicle were not injured. A1A was shut down for a short period. Florida Highway Patrol is handling the investigation. At approximately 7:12am, an officer conducted a traffic stop for a safety belt violation; afterall, we are in the middle of the National Click It or Ticket campaign. The driver was identified as William Patterson (DOB: 06/16/1990). Patterson was found to have a suspended driver's license. When the officer ordered him out of the car, he chose not to comply. The video below shows what ensued. The driver was eventually taken into custody without hurting any innocent motorists or bystanders. Unfortunately, another officer sustained a significant injury while responding to the call. He was treated for his injury and is doing ok. Patterson was charged with: 1. Aggravated fleeing and eluding law enforcement. 2. Aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer. 3. Felony driving while license suspended. 4. Felony possession of cannabis. 5. Possession of paraphernalia. 6. Resisting arrest without violence. *This was also the second officer-involved motor vehicle accident. The suspect's vehicle struck the officer's parked vehicle. Although multiple officers sustained injuries today, we are thankful to go home today. Police officers never know what they will face when they walk into work.Today was one of those days that remind us just how inherently dangerous this job can be. We can confidently say our officers are well-trained and willing to put themselves in harms way to protect the public. We can't thank you enough for your continued support. We're here if you need us.
