High numbers of dead fish wash up in central Fla.

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — Officials are trying to find out what caused a number of dead fish to wash up along a portion of Ormond Beach.
 
Volusia County Beach Safety Capt. Tammy Marris says the fish were found Monday spread over section of a couple of miles.
 
Marris says they took pictures and sent them to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
 
Wildlife agency spokeswoman Kelly Richmond told the Daytona Beach News-Journal the fish appear to be spot croakers. She says the agency is investigating but noted there is a lot of trawling activity in the area, which is a method of fishing by pulling a net through the water. Sometimes smaller fish are a bycatch and get stressed and die.
