How Central Florida is helping those impacted by Hurricane Fiona

ORLANDO, Fla. — Central Florida leaders are taking what they learned from Hurricane Maria to help people get through the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona.

The governor of Puerto Rico said it will take at least a week to survey all the damage caused by the storm.

Alianza Center, with other local groups, are calling on elected leaders to act quickly and accelerate efforts with FEMA.

Groups will be heading out to Orlando International Airport, setting up a welcome center for evacuees who arrive so people know where to go, know how to get proper documentation in order and receive vouchers to help with housing.

Central Florida Congressman Darren Soto is also sending a letter to President Joe Biden to activate public assistance for those impacted, and ask agencies like HUD and the Army Corps to send support.

Soto and Osceola County Commissioner Viviana Janer will be hosting a collection drive Tuesday to ship donations to the island.
