Brush fire continues to burn near the Kennedy Space Center

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Firefighters worked to control a huge brush fire near the Kennedy Space Center.

The fire had burned 2,000 acres in Brevard County.

Firefighters said they had the fire 75 percent contained.

The fire, on the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, did not threatening homes, but about 50 campers at KARS Park were told to leave, according to officials.

NASA employees were also asked to leave.

Brevard County firefighters and NASA firefighters are working to contain the fire.

Officials said they believe that lightning sparked the fire Monday afternoon.

The fire was sending smoke across Interstate 95 near the Space Center.
