Hurricane Maria: WFTV revisits devastation in Puerto Rico

PUERTO RICO — Nearly a month after Hurricane Maria devastated the island of Puerto Rico, many Puerto Ricans are struggling to get back on their feet.

No water, no food and no electricity are still, understandably, some of the biggest challenges facing the Puerto Rican community.

WFTV Channel 9's Nancy Alvarez visited the island days after the Category 4 hit Puerto Rico. The island was already struggling from the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.

Alvarez is now back in Puerto Rico witnessing the ongoing issues first-hand.

Hospitals

Many hospitals are running on limited generator power, Alvarez wrote on Facebook.

Gustavo Martinez is 11 years old and is at the Children's Hospital in Bayamón. He’s undergoing tests for a possible bacterial infection.

Martinez told Alvarez he hopes he and "all of Puerto Rico feels better soon."

Unemployment

Hundreds of people stood in the unemployment line in Bayamon. People told Alvarez that they’ve stood in line since 3 a.m. and just wait for word on jobs.

One woman said she's dropped her resume off at dozens of places.

Many people are traveling to San Juan for jobs, food, water, gas and a cellphone signal.
