I-4 Ultimate project: What has been completed?

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — While Central Floridians are in it for the long haul with the I-4 Ultimate project, Channel 9 took a deeper dive into what has already been completed.

The 21-mile complete makeover of the interstate from the attractions through downtown Orlando and north is to create connectivity to ultimately enhance overall traffic throughout the region.

The contractor on the project, SGL, broke ground in 2015.

But there have been several bumps along the way, including congestion mixed with a whole lot of delays on the roads and with the overall project.

Here’s what’s already been completed:

  • Thirteen miles of eastbound I-4 lanes from Anderson Street through the eastern projects are already in their final footprints.
  • Drivers who take Maitland Boulevard can now travel on the elevated lanes of I-4 westbound, allowing them to fully bypass traffic lights at Lake Destiny Road, Keller Road and Maitland Summit Boulevard.
  • Crews removed left hand exits, such as the ones near South Street and Kirkman Road.

This summer, drivers were told they will be using seven new flyover bridges as part of the I-4 and 408 interchange, which is promised to open on 4th of July weekend.

With more construction zones, closures and delays in the future, the Florida Department of Transportation said the end goal is getting closer with competition dates, but it urged Floridians that it is working on a big undertaking, a project that could have easily taken 20 years is on track to be done within seven.
