Some Lake County inmates released to help stop spread of coronavirus behind bars

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — The Lake County Sheriff’s Office recently released dozens of inmates that officials say is part of the plan to prevent the spread of the coronavirus behind bars.

Officials said if people started getting sick inside the jail, they would have to deal with a healthy emergency, staffing issues and corrections if they became ill.

Officials identified 42 inmates who were released. They were facing “less serious charges,” mostly misdemeanors but some felonies. Lake County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. John Herrell said.
