Man arrested on drunken driving charges after hitting 3 women with car

ORLANDO, Fla. — Three young women are recovering from serious injuries after a man police said was driving drunk slammed into them in downtown Orlando

Alyshia Lemons, Deniece Gilbert and Dawn Williams were trying to cross Garland Avenue, near Central Boulevard early Friday morning when they were hit.

A witness said many people park underneath I-4 when they come to downtown. The women were walking across the street back to the parking lot when witnesses said Mohammed Kais came flying down the road.

"I heard the brakes, kinda, then I heard the hit, and you see the girls kinda fly through the air," said a witness who did not want to be identified.

The eyewitness said they were headed from the parking lot across the roadway, just shy of the crosswalk during a red light.

He said he stopped to let them go, but Kais plowed right into them.

Alyshia Lemons is just one day shy of her 23rd birthday, and was getting ready to go out and celebrate Thursday night with two friends when everything went wrong.

The witness said the girls were in shock, and police were telling them to stay calm and stay down.

The three women were rushed to the emergency room.

Kais was arrested and police said he was twice over the legal blood-alcohol limit.

The scene was apparently so horrifying some bystanders even took to Twitter to post what they saw.

Court records show Kais has a 2010 arrest on charges of drunken driving, which were dropped, several speeding violations and a citation for driving with an open container.

A man who answered from Kais' number said he did not want to talk.
