DANIA BEACH, Fla. — Authorities say a South Florida man fatally shot his neighbor's pit bull and then dumped it in the trash.
The Broward Sheriff's Office reports that 51-year-old Franklin Davis fired two shots at his neighbor's dog Saturday evening. The shooting was reported the next day, and Davis told investigators that he shot the dog to protect his daughter.
Instead of calling for medical assistance or law enforcement after the shooting, authorities say the Dania Beach man loaded the animal into a vehicle, drove about a half-mile away and left the dog near a trash bin. Authorities believe the dog was still alive when Davis left him but eventually died.
Davis was arrested and charged with animal cruelty and unlawful discharge of a firearm. He was being held without bond. Jail records didn't list an attorney.
