SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. - A 23-year-old Winter Park man was arrested Wednesday afternoon and a 32-year-old Orlando man was arrested Thursday afternoon in connection with the fatal shooting of an intruder at a Seminole County home, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office said.
Karl Makarowski Rodriguez was charged with felony murder and burglary in connection with the death of Daniel Valentin, 33, of Orlando, who was shot Monday afternoon while burglarizing a home on Westbourne Drive, Sheriff's Office spokesman Bob Kealing said.
Valentin died Tuesday, one day after deputies said he was shot by the homeowner as he came into her bedroom.
Deputies said Rodriguez took off after the shooting. He was later spotted at a gas station on Alafaya Trail with a wounded Valentin.
Resident Marty Lafave said she is glad the woman in the home was able to protect herself.
"You think you’re going to walk into a house and steal all this stuff with nothing happening," she said. "It didn't happen this time."
Investigators said Rodriguez was charged because he acted as a lookout during the burglary. He was booked into the John E. Polk Correctional Facility.
Rodriguez’s attorney tried to argue for a lower bond, but a judge ordered that he remain jailed without bail.
Deputies said that on Thursday afternoon they also arrested Luis Lopez Ruiz, 32, of Orlando, on charges of felony murder and burglary in connection with the burglary and fatal shooting.
Investigators said Ruiz drove a getaway vehicle to and from the scene.
He was also booked in to the John E. Polk Correctional Facility.
The incident remains under investigation.
