MARION COUNTY, Fla. — Marion County Public Schools announced late Friday that they are laying off 261 employees.
Among those being laid off are 160 first-year teachers.
The district attributed the layoffs to a projected $29 million deficit. They said the layoffs will save the district nearly $4 million. They said the other $25 million would come from other areas.
Superintendent George Tomyn met with the employees Friday afternoon to tell them of the layoffs.
