Medical examiner working to determine if lightning killed Volusia County construction worker

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A medical examiner is working to determine whether lightning killed a Volusia County construction worker.

First responders arrived at a home under construction on Sterling Pointe Drive in Deltona around 2 p.m. Monday after witnesses said a man standing on the roof working on the framing was struck by lightning.

The man’s coworkers said the strike caused him to fall to the concrete below, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

The man, identified as 24-year-old Edvin J. Velasquez Cinto, died at a nearby hospital.

Though the initial examination indicates a lightning strike, deputies said the medical examiner will determine the man’s official cause of death.
