Melbourne man desperate to get elderly parents on flight from Puerto Rico

MELBOURNE, Fla. — A Melbourne man is trying to get his elderly parents a flight out of Puerto Rico.

Luis Alvarez said his parents are stuck in their apartment and are running out of food and water.

"It's a pretty bad situation,” he said.

Hurricane Maria has left much of Puerto Rico in ruins—without power or communications.

"Last time I talked to my dad when the storm was hitting, I told my son -- I said, 'Maybe this is the last time that we're going to talk to them,'" he said.

He’s been trying to find a flight to the island, but has had no luck.

He did find a flight off the island for his parents—but it’s a week away and he’s worried his parents might not be able to make it that long.

“If they need to go to the hospital for any situation, that could be a very bad situation for them," he said.

Alvarez said he hasn’t given up hope trying to find an earlier flight.
