Mystery project for Melbourne could get millions from state

TALLAHASSEE, Fla — There's something brewing at the Melbourne International Airport.

An aerospace company wants to make Brevard County its home, and with it, bring in big jobs and even more money for the local economy.

But trying to find out which company isn't that easy.

Channel 9's Kenneth Craig found the project documents, but they don't list the name of the company, just the name Project Magellan.

Local economic-development leaders are touting it as one of the biggest projects of its kind in the nation.

"That's the thing, that's what I'm interested in seeing -- who is it? They're kind of keeping that a secret. Who's the company going to be?" resident Keith Howell asked.

Craig went to the local Economic Development Commission Tuesday to try to learn more about the project.

The project resolution shows that the mystery aerospace company would not only bring in high-paying engineering jobs, but would spend $500 million as part of its investment at the airport.

"For a community of our size, to be talking about a project of this magnitude, building projects of the 21st century,  is just incredible," said Lynda Weatherman, president and CEO of the Economic Development Commission of Florida's Space Coast.

Last week, the county commission voted to do its part to bring the project to Melbourne. Now  state lawmakers are deciding whether to award nearly $21 million as an incentive to make the project a reality.

Economic leaders said they signed an agreement not to release that company's name until everything is a done deal. They said that is expected to happen next month.
