New owner reopens Pine Hills barber shop where community activist shot to death

PINE HILLS, Fla. — Kamahl Kimble has reopened the barber shop where community activist, and good friend, Brian Berry was shot and killed in October.

The shop has a new name and a new look, but Kimble said he wanted to reopen in the same location out of solidarity with the community.

“It means more to me than just a business,” he said.

Berry was killed inside the barber shop and Kimble couldn’t stand the idea of anyone cutting hair at Berry’s work area, so he removed it.

“I just couldn’t see nobody else cutting at his station,” Kimble said.

Upgraded security measures have been added to the shop, including a strike lock and extra surveillance cameras.

“We have cameras on the inside now so that you can get a full view of what’s going on inside,” Kimble said.

A memorial of Berry’s favorite hats has been growing inside the barber shop and Kimble plans to install a plaque.

“It just means a lot to me that I can continue what he started, you know what I’m saying?” he said. “And do it in a safe way so we don’t have to go through that hurt again.”
