Off-duty New Smyrna Beach police officer killed in car crash

A New Smyrna Beach police officer was killed in a car crash Thursday, police said.
Officers responded about 1:45 a.m. to a report of a single-vehicle crash on the north lanes of North Dixie Freeway near Creekside Circle.
The driver, Officer Josh Calverley, 29, was found dead at the scene, police said.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers are investigating what led to the crash.
“The members of the New Smyrna Beach Police Department are heartbroken to report the loss of one of our family members,” a press release read. “Josh Calverley was a soft-spoken officer with a big heart.”
Calverley, a patrol officer, would have celebrated his second year on the force in December.
He was also a U.S. Army veteran.
“His loss will be felt throughout the local law enforcement community,” the release said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”
