Officials break ground on site to honor fallen Brevard deputy

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Deputy Barbara Pill was killed in the line of duty one year ago during a traffic stop, and Wednesday, she was honored at the site of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office's north precinct in Titusville.

The new precinct will be a new center that will bear her name.

“Every time you saw her she had a big smile on her face. She loved life,” said Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey.

Ivey, the former sheriff and Barbara Pill’s family was in attendance. They asked to quietly observe the somber anniversary.

It was 11:13 a.m. on March 6, 2012, that deputy Pill was lost to her department and her family in the line of duty.

The veteran deputy was shot and killed after she stopped a vehicle connected to some stolen furniture from a local motel. The two suspects in that case have yet to stand trial.

But Wednesday was about honoring Pill and her memory.

Pill was the first Brevard County killed in the line of duty in 16 years.
