Officials warn of strong rip currents at central Fla. beaches

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Officials are warning beachgoers that strong rip currents are expected along the coast through the Memorial Day weekend.

Beaches in central Florida were visibly crowded Saturday as hundreds of people headed out for the holiday weekend.

Strong rip currents are expected at both Volusia and Brevard county beaches during Saturday, Sunday and Monday. In Volusia County, beach patrol is fully staffed and lifeguards are flying red flags to warn beachgoers.

As of noon Saturday, beach patrol crews in Volusia County said they had already rescued six people from the water. None of the six needed to go to the hospital and they were all checked out on scene, according to officials.

Officials said swimmers at the beach should try to stay close to a lifeguard tower.
