Authorities ID victim in fatal New Smyrna Beach house fire

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal house fire that happened in New Smyrna Beach Sunday night.

Firefighters said crews arrived at the burning home on Howard Avenue and found heavy smoke coming from it.

After the fire was extinguished about 11:30 p.m., firefighters began a search of the home and found 58-year-old Gregory Robinson dead in a front room.

"It's terrible. My heart goes out to him," said neighbor Zobera Nesbitt. "He was to me a nice person. He never did me no harm, you know."

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said it is conducting an investigation into the cause of death. The Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy on the victim.

The heat from the blaze was so intense that it melted the next door neighbor's blinds that were hanging in a window.

Fire crews from Volusia County, New Smyrna Beach and Port Orange responded to the fire.

No foul play is expected.
