Firefighters plan to take mayor to court over vaccination requirement

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — About 45% of Orange County Fire Rescue remains unvaccinated and will likely be disciplined Thursday.

County Mayor Jerry Demings said they won’t be fired when the deadline hits but instead be given a written reprimand.

But some firefighters plan to take him to court.

At the county commission meeting Tuesday, several firefighters hoped to gain commissioners’ support against the mandate.

Commissioner Nicole Wilson pointed out that those firefighters have to respond to homes where children who are not old enough to get the shot yet may be having an emergency, and that no parent should have to ask dispatchers if the first responders who are vaccinated.

On Monday, Demings received a letter stating the county issued the vaccine requirement without legal authority, and that the requirement directly infringes upon firefighters’ constitutional rights in the state of Florida.

The union representing firefighters who are refusing to get vaccinated is not supporting the litigation.
