Man charged with shooting, killing girlfriend held without bond

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Investigators said the man who initially claimed his girlfriend was shot and killed by home invaders was charged in her death Friday night.

An Orange County judge denied bond for John DeJesus, 28, just before noon Saturday. DeJesus acted confused, puffed his cheeks and shook his head after the judge’s order.

According to deputies, DeJesus shot and killed his girlfriend inside the couple's home and in front of their child.

The admitted Latin Kings gang member bonded out of jail May 4 on a lesser charge, even after investigators had already named him as the main suspect in 22-year-old YolizMarie Borrero's death.

Detectives said DeJesus initially told them three men barged into his Millrace Court home, demanded drugs and money, and then shot Borrero in front of their 4-month-old daughter and his 4-year-old son. According to his arrest affidavit, he told investigators he believed he was targeted because he sells drugs.

Authorities later said DeJesus' story appeared to be fabricated and they soon determined the shooting was domestic violence.

DeJesus was arrested twice after Borrero's death—once on a drug charge and the second time on the weapons charge, but was able to bond out of jail both times. In his third arrest, DeJesus was picked on Semoran Boulevard and charged with first-degree murder.

Deputies have not said what may have prompted the shooting.
