Belle Isle City Council votes out board member over online posts, possible violations

BELLE ISLE, Fla. — The Belle Isle City Council voted out one of its board members this week after they accused him of possible charter and sunshine law violations and undermining its staff with the things he posted online.

Belle Isle City Councilman Rick Miller ran unopposed in the election and took office in April 2021.

But just four months later, he has been removed by his fellow council members.

The issue stemmed from discussions about city business on Belle Isle’s community’s page. The mayor said some of the time was about the city manager and his contract.

Miller did get due process in a special city council meeting Monday and defended his actions. But the mayor was not receptive to some of Miller’s explanations and shut him down.

Voters wrote emails and came to the meeting expressing their concerns about making such a move.
