VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A 33-year-old Holly Hill man who serves as a board member at a remote-control car racing organization was arrested Tuesday evening after molesting a 14-year-old girl at a remote-control car race track near Daytona Beach, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.
Detectives said the victim’s parents on Friday discovered sexually explicit text messages on their daughter’s cellphone from Joseph Bruce, who performs track maintenance and car repairs.
The parents immediately notified Port Orange police, and that agency told the Sheriff’s Office that the text messages referred to an incident that happened at the Strickland RC Raceway on Strickland Range Road near North Clyde Morris Boulevard.
Investigators said Bruce began texting the victim about sex earlier this month, and within days, he had sexually abused the girl in a trailer at the track.
They said he also sent the girl explicit photos and videos and talked to her about her performing more sexual acts on him in the future.
Detectives said they are trying to determine if Bruce has victimized other children.
Investigators said that in December, Holly Hill police accused Bruce of molesting another girl, who said he made her perform a sexual act on him.
The case was not prosecuted because the victim’s mother did not support her daughter’s allegations, and the girl’s statements could not be proven, deputies said.
In the latest alleged incident, Bruce was arrested on a warrant charging him with lewd or lascivious battery, lewd or lascivious molestation, use of a computer to seduce/solicit/lure a child, two counts of transmission of harmful material to a minor and promoting sexual performance of a child.
He is being held at the Volusia County Branch Jail in lieu of a $260,000 bail.
Detectives said Bruce could face more charges as they search for other potential victims.
Anyone who might have been a victim or who has information to provide is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 386-323-3574.
