City leaders looking to change park hours at Checker Park

PARRAMORE, Fla. — Dozens of Orlando’s homeless have been camping out at Checker Park in Parramore for years, and with new development around the park residents are complaining.

City leaders will vote on closing the park at sunset, hoping to cut down on people sleeping in the park overnight. Now, the hours are from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Thomas Chatmon, the executive director of the downtown development board, said upcoming construction on I-4 will close a major portion of Checker Park for the rest of the year.

During that time, city leader will work on a plan to fix the problem under the bridge.

City leaders are proposing to change the hours at all city parks to sunrise to sunset.

A vote is expected to happen at the end of the month.
