Orlando police provide updates on two deadly weekend shootings

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando police held a press conference Monday to provide updates on two deadly shootings that happened in Orlando on Sunday.

The press conference was held at 1 p.m. at Orlando Police headquarters.

Police discussed the shooting death of a 16-year-old Evans High School student. According to police, Tavyiah King was shot and killed early Sunday.

Police responded to reports of a shooting just before 1 a.m. at the Wawa on John Young Parkway near Silver Star Road.

Responding officers found the victim a short distance away on Silver Star Road. She was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital, where she died.

Police also discussed the shooting death of 34-year-old Joseph Torres. According to police, the shooting occurred near the intersection of Orange Avenue and Central Boulevard.

Police responded to the area after hearing gunshots around 2:30 a.m.

Police said Torres was walking on Orange Avenue and turned onto Central Boulevard, when he encountered a group of people who were standing near the building. When Torres tried to walk through the group, police said a suspect blocked the path and began to fight Torres.

The suspect then fatally shot Torres, police said.
