Road in Ocoee to be renamed after man who was lynched while attempting to vote

OCOEE, Fla. — A road in Ocoee is one step closer to being renamed for a Black man who was lynched after Blacks attempted to vote in Orange County.

Silver Star Road, between Winters Landing Drive and Clarke Road, will be named Julius “July” Perry Memorial Highway.

Perry was shot during a shootout when an angry mob, including members of the Ku Klux Klan, showed up at his Ocoee home.

He escaped but was later found and dragged into Orlando, where he was lynched near Country Club Drive.

Black families left after their land, churches and schools were destroyed by fires, and they didn’t return until the late 1970s.

This November marks 100 years since Perry was lynched.
