Citizens for a Greater Orange County filing lawsuit against Orange Co. amid sick time issue

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A grassroots organization said its filing a lawsuit against Orange County over allegations that county commissioners violated laws meant to make sure the public isn't kept in the dark about official business.

Citizens for a Greater Orange County is alleging two things: that commissioners violated public records law and the Sunshine Law, which is meant to make sure everything involving official business is kept in the open.

Also on Friday, Citizens for a Greater Orange County is expected to announce the legal steps being taken against Mayor Teresa Jacobs over text messages that were sent during the discussion over the sick time initiative last month.

Jacobs said those texts were accidentally deleted when she switched cellphone providers. However, Jacobs did turn over the messages.

Citizens for a Greater Orange County pointed out to WFTV that the destruction of public records is illegal.
