Spirit Airlines announces major expansion at Orlando Intl. Airport

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Spirit Airlines is bringing more than a dozen new routes to Orlando International, which is set to make Florida's busiest airport even busier.

The airline and the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority announced Thursday that Central Florida travelers will soon have new options for domestic and international flights.

The airline announced new routes to Myrtle Beach, Nashville, and Greensboro, NC.

In addition, several new routes will carry passengers between Central Florida and Central America and the Caribbean. Those new routes will take passengers to San Juan, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Columbia, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Colombia.

The new flights start this September, the airline said.

By the end of 2018, the South Florida-based airline will expand to 50 flights a day at OIA, making Orlando the airline's second biggest market.

The airport, which is the busiest in Florida, is already undergoing major changes. A new south terminal is expected to open in 2020.
