Osceola County to discuss recommendations from advisory group on school resource officers

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — The Osceola County School Board will consider recommendations from an advisory group on school resource officers on Thursday morning.

The group was formed after a SRO was recorded slamming a student at Liberty High School in January.

The group wants all officers to wear body cameras on campus.

That’s just one of several recommendations the board has come up with. Currently, some SROs wear body cameras, but only St. Cloud officers are wearing them all the time.

Last week, the school resource officer advisory committee discussed several ways to improve relations with students and school resource officers.

One suggestion was better training.

Right now, law enforcement officers who end up in school don’t have to do school resource officer training. Instead, it’s voluntary.

Kissimmee police said they are committed to getting body cameras for school resource officers.

Another selection the committee made was to get the school board involved in the SRO selection process.

The school board is also considering putting guardians in some schools instead of trained officers.
