Palm Bay cancels July 4 fireworks permanently due to weather

PALM BAY, Fla. — Palm Bay police said the Independence Day Celebration at Eastern Florida State College was canceled after strong storms moved through the area late Friday afternoon.

According to police, two lightning strikes hit the stage area and might have damaged a light pole. The lightning struck near the emergency command vehicle.

Police said emergency personnel evacuated guests to safe areas during the storm.

The possibility of more bad rain, and standing water on the fairground and surrounding roads forced officials to cancel the celebration and fireworks show.

Police said no one was injured during the storm.

Officials planned to reschedule the show for Saturday, but bad weather conditions forced them to cancel the show permanently.
