• Palm Bay teen charged with neglect after hiding newborn

PALM BAY, Fla. - A Palm Bay teenager was charged with felony child neglect after she gave birth in her bathroom and put the newborn in a plastic bag under her sink.

After a lengthy investigation, 19-year-old Breanna Ross was charged with child neglect.

The charge stems from the birth of her baby in January. Police said Ross showed up at the hospital with severe blood loss and an attached umbilical cord.

When officers went to her home, they found her daughter, weighing five-pounds and 13-ounces, very much alive.

"The big question that needed to be answered was, did it rise to the level of criminal neglect?" said Yvonne Martinez, with Palm Bay police.

Ross told investigators she didn't realize she was pregnant until November and put the baby under the sink in fear of what her mother would think.

Her case was sent to the State Attorney's Office.

"We felt like it was a case that needed to be reviewed by the State Attorney's Office to determine if the facts of what she did rose to that level," said Martinez.

The Department of Children of Families said while it never took Ross' baby from her, it offered several supportive services, including teen parenting classes. A relative told Channel 9 both Ross and her baby girl are doing well, despite the child neglect charge.
