• Man's body found in SUV submerged in Spruce Creek

PORT ORANGE, Fla. - A passer-by spotted an SUV that was partially submerged in Spruce Creek, officials said Wednesday.

Port Orange firefighters said when they arrived, the SUV was completely submerged and they found a man dead inside.

Rescuers said they do not know how long the SUV had been in the water under the Moody Bridge on South Williamson Boulevard.

A diver with the Volusia County Sheriff's Office went in the water and found the body of 51-year-old Michael Gross inside.
Police said Gross is from Port Orange.

Residents said the SUV traveled along a long path from the main road, down a hill and into the water. They said it is a rare spot for accidents.

"That's 200 feet. It had to hit a curb, jump over the curb and go 200 feet and you know on dirt, you know, it's mostly dirt. It's not smooth or anything. They had to be unconscious or something. Sad," said resident Clay Butters.

Residents said the creek is about 10 feet deep in the middle.

"I just saw, like, the tire tracks over there and I don't know what could have happened, I mean, that's just a hell of a distance from the whole road," said resident Dylan Hills.

"It's terribly sad. I can't believe, you know, they must have been sitting there for a while. I mean, how could that have possibly happened, right?" said Butters.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
