• Titusville cab driver shoots would-be robber then calls 911

TITUSVILLE, Fla. -  A cab driver shot and killed a would-be armed robber in Titusville early Wednesday morning and then called 911, police said.

Authorities said the 27-year-old cab driver picked up a passenger on DeLeon Avenue and when the driver dropped him off along Mockingbird Lane, there was a dispute over the fare.

Police said the man, identified as Marize Simone Brooks, 19, told the cabbie he would get more money but instead pulled out a small caliber handgun and fired a shot at the driver, grazing him in the back of the head.

That’s when the cab driver pulled out a gun and shot Brooks several times, authorities said.

Investigators said the driver was then able to call 911.

    Driver: “I just got shot.”

    Dispatcher:  “You just got shot?”

    Driver: “Yeah.”

Dispatcher: "OK, sir. Where are you?”

Driver: “Mockingbird, off of, near Deleon."

Police said Brooks he recently told acquaintances he was desperate for cash.

“This customer of the cab company had the driver drive around to several different locations, and at some point, shoots the cab driver in the head.  We don't have a motive yet,” police said.

Some residents said in the past 50 years they haven't seen anything like that incident.

"I have never had no trouble out here.  I've raised all my kids out here, never had no trouble out here, never had nothing like this to happen," said resident Vera Dasher.

The cab driver was taken to a local hospital where his condition is has not been released.
