Police investigate missing PTA funds at Volusia middle school

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — An investigation is underway after it was discovered that funds are missing from a Volusia County middle school's Parent-Teacher Association account.

The missing money is from the PTA account at David Hinson Middle School in Daytona Beach, officials said.

"They work hard to do the fundraisers as is and for someone to steal from the kids, they need to be punished," parent Pam Crawford said.

Daytona Beach police are currently investigating the case of missing funds. The school's principal said they're also investigating and sent an automated message about the issue to parents.

"It has come to my attention that a significant amount of money collected by the PTA has been misappropriated," the principal said in the message.

Officials said no school employees had access to the missing money and the investigation is focused on a former member of the PTA. The PTA's president wouldn't discuss how much money is missing.

"It's terrible. I hope they catch them and put them in jail," parent Rebecca Cox said.

Police said they won't release the name of anyone under investigation because no one has been charged at this point.
