• Police: Polk County man dies after collision with motorcyclist

POLK COUNTY, Fla. - A man was killed by a motorcyclist when he trying to walk across U.S. Highway 17-92 Wednesday morning in Polk County.

Cecil Marston, 76, was walking south across the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 17-92 to get to the county bus stop, police said.

Marston walked in front of motorcyclist Jonathan Benham, 41, who was heading westbound on U.S. Highway 17-92. Marston was declared deceased on-scene.

Even though he was wearing a helmet, Benham was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Medical Center and was in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Officials said that it appears that Benham was not impaired or speeding, and was unable to avoid hitting Marston.

Bright House Networks technician Steve Lovette was approaching the scene when he realized that a person was hit.

Lovette stopped his van, put on the hazard lights and blocked traffic from the accident scene until law enforcement arrived, eliminating the possibility of any cars hitting the victim.

"We have a very valuable partnership with Bright House Networks, called 'Operation Bright Eyes' that Mr. Lovette exemplified today. In this program, Bright House technicians are trained to look for suspicious behavior or any other way they can assist law enforcement, fire, and EMS.  Partnerships like these are priceless," Sheriff Grady Judd said in a release.
