Police: Man went on Altamonte Mall shopping spree with fake traveler's checks

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — Police say they just caught a man who has been going on shopping sprees at the Altamonte Mall with phony traveler's checks.

Altamonte Springs investigators said they were tipped off after several clerks became suspicious about the checks.

According to investigators, they do not think this was his first time pulling off the same thing at that same mall. They said that someone tried to use the fake checks at the mall a couple weeks ago, so store clerks knew what to look for.

Juan Jordan allegedly targeted eight stores to go shopping for clothes and money.

Detectives said he was using fake $100 traveler's checks at the mall to buy items and keep the leftover cash.

Investigators said they said they couldn't remember the last time they saw someone use phony traveler's checks.

According to investigators, Jordan bought a pink perfume set at Victoria's Secret and candles at Bath and Body Works.

Investigators said they believe Jordan had a previous shopping spree with the phony checks and that is what tipped people off to him.

Two weeks ago police sent out an email to all of the stores in the mall warning them about a man using phony traveler's checks.

Police said one of the mall clerks noticed that a traveler's check looked unusual so police were called.

When the officers caught up with Jordan he had several bags in his hands from all the stores he targeted, said police.

"I believe this is someone who has done this before, and I believe he would have continued to do it until we caught him," said Rob Pelton of the Altamonte Springs Police Department.

Police said when officers caught Jordan Sunday night they found $800 in his pockets and six phony $100 traveler's checks.

Police said they aren't sure where Jordan got the checks.
