Police: Slain Poinciana student killed by classmate

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Investigators said it wasn't a stranger, but rather a fellow classmate, who killed an Osceola County teen.

In November the body of Alicia Barnett, 18, was found near her alternative high school in Winter Haven on the Chain of Lakes Trail.

Police said the suspects set Barnett up.

Winter Haven Police Chief Gary Hester did not mince words when talking about the man suspected of killing Barnett.

"Frankly, I'm agitated that we have this continuing thug culture of violence, not only in our community but throughout our country and certainly this state," said Hester.

It happened on a quiet trail near New Beginnings High School where Barnett was a student.

"We basically have kids and teenagers killing kids and teenagers over senseless reasons," said Hester.

Police said Antonio Calloway, 19, and another suspect set up a meeting with Barnett along the trail before school started on the morning of Nov. 12.

"They lured her there to rob her of a significant amount of marijuana. Something did not go as they had planned and (they) ultimately ended up shooting and killing Miss Barnett," said Hester.

Winter Haven police said they used cellphone communications between Barnett and Calloway to tie Calloway to the slaying, but they said they are convinced there was another person there.

Police said the investigation will continue and they expect more arrests.
