Police: Tavares man, 89, in custody after shooting, killing companion

TAVARES, Fla. — An 89-year-old Tavares man shot and killed his partner of 25 years as part of a suicide pact Friday, police said.

Rosemary Getz, 88, was shot by her companion of 25 years, Carl Lange, 89.

Tavares police responded to the couple’s home on Doris Avenue for a well-being check requested by a family member at 2 p.m.

Lange admitted to killing Getz as part of a pact in which he would kill himself as well, police said.

Neighbors in the area were upset to learn about the shooting.

“I just (saw) her a couple of hours ago walking the dogs earlier this morning,” said resident Kurt Parent.

Police took the gun from Lange, who was then placed into custody and taken to jail.

Police are still determining his possible charges.

The investigation is ongoing.
