Man arrested for shooting 14-year-old cousin

DELAND, Fla. — A 19-year-old man is under arrest for shooting his 14-year-old cousin in the chest, DeLand Police said.

Victory Franklin, Jr. of Orange City is charged with aggravated battery.

DeLand Police started investigating after 6 p.m. Sunday along West Hubbard Avenue near South Adelle Avenue.

According to police documents, the victim said Franklin confronted him inside the bedroom of a home. The victim said Franklin pointed a 9mm weapon at his head, but managed to swat it away. As the victim was doing so, the weapon fired, wounding him in the chest.

According to DeLand Police Chief Jason Umberger, Franklin initially fled after the shooting but was later caught.

The 14-year-old victim, Jayden Thompson, has been released from the hospital.

In a Facebook post shortly after the shooting, Thompson said that it was all over a glove, however, police have not said what prompted the shooting.

According to police documents, Franklin claimed he was showing the gun to his cousin and it suddenly fired when he charged the weapon.

Detectives are working to determine what happened, police said.
