Polk Co. boy suspended for taking BB gun to school

LAKELAND, Fla. — A central Florida student has been suspended for bringing a BB gun to his middle school in Lakeland.

The Ledger of Lakeland reports another student told the boy he couldn't have a gun on school grounds Tuesday morning,  so he hid it outside Crystal Lake Middle School.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office says someone alerted the school's resource deputy, who located the unloaded gun.

The boy returned to school on Wednesday, and took the FCAT exam. Greg Bondurant, who oversees school safety for the school district, says someone at the school may face discipline for allowing the boy to return to take the test.

Officials say the boy has been suspended for 10 days and faces expulsion.
