Officials investigate deadly apartment fire in Polk County

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — Officials in Polk County are investigating an apartment fire that left one person dead and another hospitalized Saturday afternoon.

The fire broke out around 12:30 p.m. at an apartment building on Snively Avenue in Eloise.

Flames could be seen coming from the front of the building when firefighters arrived on scene. Officials said the fire was primarily in the front of the building, although the back of the structure sustained smoke and water damage.

One person was killed in the fire, while another victim had to be airlifted to Tampa General Hospital. Their identities haven't been released by officials.

The building is made up of eight apartment units and 11 displaced residents are being assisted by the Red Cross, according to officials.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal.
