Students help local business owner feed the homeless

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Winter Haven High School students team up with a local business owner to help feed the homeless.

Grant Piche is the owner of Catering Oasis in downtown Winter Haven. Piche keeps a small fridge outside of his business that he fills with sandwiches and water to help feed the homeless.

“I told our students about this, and they jumped at the chance to help,” said Betsy Zinsmeister, the culinary instructor at Winter Haven High.

On Tuesday, teacher Jordan Isaacs, Zinsmeister and students made 72 sandwiches.

“Some of the students wrote nice messages on the baggies,” Zinsmeister said. “Mr. Isaacs and I took the box full of sandwiches to the fridge today, and we found it was completely empty. We were able to put all 72 sandwiches in the fridge, and had a gentleman standing by waiting for us to finish so he could get one out.”

“This really made an impression on the students, and I’m sure it will be something we continue to help with,” she said. “We’re really proud of the kids for working so hard.”
