Deputies: Caregiver facing charges after inappropriately touching patient’s sister

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — A caregiver for a disabled Seminole County man is facing charges after being accused of inappropriately touching a patient’s younger sister.

The girl told investigators the Fernando Gomez had been caring for her brother for more than a year, but felt uncomfortable after their interactions became sexual in nature.

According to investigators with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, Gomez took care of a disabled man and assisted his family daily at their home in unincorporated Maitland for more than a year.

The man’s minor sister, who is between 12 and 16 years old, alleges that during the last five months, her relationship with Gomez became inappropriate and sexual in nature.

“This individual was taking advantage of his relationship with this family and their trust. The grooming of the child, taking advantage of her. Fortunately, she did disclose what was going on,” said Bob Kealing, a public information officer.

Gomez was an independent contractor at Light of Life in Orange County for several years.

Light of Life provides in-home care to individuals with disabilities all over Central Florida. In the 18 years it has been in business, this is the first time something like this has occurred.

Gomez is facing two charges of lewd and lascivious behavior.

He is expected to back in court for his arraignment next month.
