‘Mask choice’ protestors gathering at Seminole County school board meeting to push for mask policy change

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Some Seminole County parents are attending Tuesday’s school board meeting to protest the district’s indefinite face mask policy.

The protest was organized by the Florida Freedom Keepers, who say they are not anti-mask, but are for mask choice.  They believe the mask policy tramples on parents' rights and denies the students' fundamental or constitutional rights to attain a quality in-person education.

A district spokesperson said they will allow the group to speak at Tuesday’s meeting to give their opinions.

Attendees will have to wear a mask, but can take the mask off to speak at the podium. If they refuse to wear a mask, they will be asked to watch the meeting in another room. If members of the group become rowdy, like was seen recently at a school board meeting in Volusia County, deputies will escort them out of the building.

“In terms of the district, we are basing our mask and facial covering policy based off health professionals that are all local health professionals and task force we work with,” said Michael Lawrence, the district’s communications officer. “From the beginning with our opening plan, it’s not about individual students, it’s about protecting everybody.”

The district said it is not planning to change its policy, especially with the increase in COVID-19 cases in the community and across the country.

Officials said extra deputies will be on hand to make sure that the crowd adheres to the school board meeting rules of conduct.
