Projects in Seminole County face hurdles due to coronavirus economic slowdown

SANFORD, Fla. — Seminole County commissioners said COVID-19 will have a major impact on their budget over the next couple of years.

Some projects in the county may be scaled down or could be shelved altogether.

One of the most massive and expensive projects commissioners have been looking at is the Five Points project, a one stop shopping hub for all county offices and services located at 17-92 and Eslinger Way.

County chairman Jay Zembower said COVID-19 could impact the future of that project.

"We are analyzing that, I mean, we had plans now we've had this downturn,” Zembower said. “We've had an almost 19 percent impact on fiscal years 2021's budget that will be worse for 2122.”

Some projects already earmarked by commissioners will go forward, such as the Juvenile Detention Center, which commissioners approved recently.

But other projects not earmarked will be looked at individually.

Zembower said the Five Points project could be scaled down going forward.
